Designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the Barbican transformed a bomb-damaged part of the City into a neighbourhood of homes, gardens and cultural spaces. The residential estate took shape in the 1960s and 1970s, followed by the arts centre in 1982. Listed in 2001, it remains a landmark of British Brutalism.
